A LOVE OF LEARNING

Walhampton is an intellectually stimulating school where children are inspired to think for themselves and develop their own opinions through reflection and debate. An abiding commitment to a fully rounded education allows us to provide a breadth of pathways, tailored to the needs of the individual.

At Walhampton, our mission is to ensure every child achieves their potential whether they are age two or 13. We deliver academic excellence through a diverse and engaging curriculum and an enriching co-curricular offering. Alongside academic success, we foster ambition, resilience, leadership and kindness. Through the framework of the PSB (the Pre-Senior Baccalaureate) we explicitly teach learning skills to all of our pupils, ensuring they each leave us with a lifelong love of learning, ready for their next phase in education.

While the National Curriculum serves as the core of our programme here at Walhampton, we never lose sight of deeper opportunities for joyful, creative and holistic learning. It’s all part of our unique approach which balances academic rigor with a passion for whole-child development, stretching the concept of success far beyond the classroom. Our emphasis is in creating a thriving, happy environment through a broad curriculum, taught by talented and dedicated teachers - who nurture the children academically, socially and emotionally.

Pre-Senior Baccalaureate (PSB)

The PSB (Pre-Senior Baccalaureate) is a framework for a whole school approach encompassing our academic focus as well as supporting each child’s personal development.

The PSB framework fits alongside our well-crafted curriculum and both nurture curiosity and global thinking fit for 21st century education, developing the right knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, to create resilient learners able to take on the challenges of the future.

At the heart of the PSB model are the six core skills of:

  • Thinking and learning
  • Reviewing and improving
  • Communicating
  • Leadership
  • Independence
  • Collaboration

The PSB enables the brightest pupils to fly higher, while ensuring that all pupils are able to show what they can do, not what they cannot do.

PSB in the Senior Years

The PSB provides an accredited assessment model recognised by all leading senior schools, and in doing so enables us to deliver a broad and rigorous curriculum for Years 7 and 8.  We take the best from the Common Entrance syllabus, preparing our pupils for a hybrid of traditional Common Entrance exams and rigorous internally moderated assessments.

PSPQ (Pre-Senior Project Qualification): Our Year 8 students complete their learning journey through an extended project, the Pre-Senior Project Qualification (PSPQ). This provides an opportunity for children to investigate and research a subject which they are passionate about. The children inspire others by sharing their research and honing their presentation skills. Their final presentations are externally moderated and accredited in line with the PSB core skills.

Children leave Walhampton at the end of Year 8 with so much more than just an impressive set of exam results and onward scholarships: we support them to be the best version of themselves so that they can embrace the challenges that lie ahead of them with confidence, whilst being happy, successful and positive contributors in tomorrow’s world.
