Academics

Walhampton children achieve consistently impressive academic results, with the Independent Schools Inspectorate reporting that our "Pupils' achievements and their learning, attitudes, and skills are excellent."

We prepare our boys and girls for 13+ Common Entrance and scholarships to senior independent schools, including Eton College, Wycombe Abbey, Winchester College, Marlborough, St Swithun's, Radley, Clayesmore, Canford, Bryanston, Stowe and King Edward VI. With some children leaving us at 11, we prepare for those exams too.

The Prep School normally has two classes per year group and, if numbers require, three. Small class sizes are the norm. Across the school, highly experienced qualified teachers inspire and bring learning to life: their multi-sensory approach complements our broad curriculum, developing meaningful cross-curricular links.

In Years 3, 4 and 5, children are in classes of parallel ability but placed into appropriate sets for English and Maths. From Year 6, classes are streamed and children continue to be set in three sets for English and Maths regardless of form sizes.

Every child at Walhampton day and boarding school also has ample opportunity to create and perform in music, drama, art and sculpture. In Years 7 and 8, the children take DT, ICT, PE and Drama as part of a rotating carousel, giving them the breadth of curriculum without sacrificing academic time.

Throughout, our Learning Support Unit is available to offer bespoke support to children, providing additional help if required. Pupils also love our Library: a stunning room with views across to the Isle of Wight.
