Walhampton pupil's trip to Arnhem leaves an 'indelible mark'
This was the third Walhampton trip to Arnhem, in Holland, to commemorate the bitter battle fought in World War 2 as depicted in the film ‘A Bridge Too Far.’ Over 30 mums, dads, staff and children took part in what felt less like a battlefield ‘tour’ and more like a ‘pilgrimage to remember’. Over three full days the group walked and cycled around the battlefield, learning of stories of courage, carnage and the resilience of the human spirit. The highlight, as always, was meeting the veterans themselves who willingly shared their own remarkable and life-changing stories. Distinguishable by their red berets and medals, every veteran is now in their nineties. They form a band of men, which is rapidly dwindling in number. One of our parents commented ‘This was a school trip which will stay with me for many years. It was history lesson unlike any I have ever experienced before. To see my twelve year standing on a battlefield with a ninety four year old, hanging on his every word, both of them arm in arm, has left an indelible mark.’
Newspapers from Europe and the UK covered the special weekend in Arnhem. Click here to read more.
