Year Eight's School Trip to HMS Victory

Walhampton at HMS Victory

This term Year 8 have been studying the Napoleonic Wars as part of their Common Entrance syllabus. They have been looking at the Battle of Trafalgar in particular so a visit to see HMS Victory, Nelson’s flagship, was an opportunity not to be missed. Aboard the ship on her 250th birthday, the children were taken around HMS Victory learning how the ship was run during the heat of battle and what the conditions were like. We stood on the actual spot where Horatio Nelson was wounded and we saw the exact barrel in which his body was transported back to England after the battle.

Then we visited the Trafalgar Museum where the highlight was an interactive experience of the actual Battle of Trafalgar. We could actually smell the smoke and feel what it was like to be part of this battle on 21st October 1805 in those cold waters off the coast of Spain.

After lunch, we visited the Action Stations Centre which involved a more modern and interactive look at aspects of history with the climbing wall, helicopter simulator and reaction test being the most popular activities.

All in all we had a fantastic day out and history really came alive aboard this magnificent vessel.

Thank you to our Year 8 photographer Angus Pollock for taking such fantastic pictures on the day.
