Lest we forget

Walhampton Headmaster, Titus Mills and a group of 32 children, mums, dads and staff made the school's second trip to Arnhem in Holland.

The three day trip was a rare opportunity for pupils from an English school to take part in the annual commemorations at Arnhem, to mark the 69th anniversary of the battle fought there during World War II.

As well as visiting a number of important sites associated with the battle, Walhampton children were invited to lay flowers at the graves of fallen soldiers during the service held in the main cemetery. There were numerous opportunities to meet and talk to veterans of the battle.

One Year 8 pupil wrote after our trip ‘This was a weekend I will never forget. It was the best history lesson I’ve ever had. Having met the veterans and heard the sacrifice they made, I can never take our freedom for granted ever again.’
